The Mill Tower

There are three types of Windmill and Wheatley mill is of the type called a Tower mill. It has a rather unusual octagonal (8 sided) stone and brick tower. The facets of the tower taper towards the top and just below the Cap the tower becomes round.

The tower has three storeys, from ground level upwards these are: The Ground Floor where the flour was collected, the Stone floor where the grain is milled, and the Grain or Bin floor where the grain was stored. On top of the tower was placed a rotating wooden Cap to which the Sails were connected.

The Tower has two sets of three windows (one for each floor) on opposing faces of the mill. It also has two opposing doors at ground level and a loading door on the side nearest Wheatley at the Stone floor level.
